Scientific Anglers Ultra-4 Fly Line
In our experience, fly lines can be grouped into three broad categories:
(1) I'm broke and I can only cast 20 feet, anyway; (2) $40 is a lot of money, but
it's an investment, right?; and (3) how did I ever make due without this line?
Scientific Anglers Ultra-4 falls into category #3. We tested the weight forward
version. Buying a WF line usually means you pick up the ability to cast farther,
but you lose some of your ability to make a delicate presentation. This is also
true of this line, but to a much smaller extent than expected -- delicate
presentations are still possible. Also, the line floats high, making it easy to
pick up off the water, and it lays out nice and straight -- almost no coil memory.
One of the finest lines we've used. You can order the line from Bass Pro Shop by
clicking below. NO, we do NOT receive a commission from the sale. (Grade A+)
UPDATE: Scientific Angler's Ultra-4 is no longer in
production, but there is good news. The next generation is SA's Supra fly line,
which is essentially "Ultra-5". We haven't had the opportunity to try it out yet
(my Ultra-4 still hasn't worn out), but I have high hopes that Supra will only improve
things more.
